Sustainability at Bay Flats

LET’S TAKE CARE OF OUR BAY SYSTEM AND MARINE HABITAT TOGETHER
MAINTAINING A THRIVING FISHERY AND CLEANER MARINE ENVIRONMENT WILL REQUIRE US TO DO MORE WITH NATURAL RESOURCES WE CURRENTLY HAVE.

BAY FLATS CARES

After noticing an increase in environmental pollution along our waterways, Bay Flats Lodge committed to change the way we do business. We figured if we do the right thing, we may influence our customers and other businesses to do the same.

While we’re doing what we can to help clean up our local bay systems, it’s not enough. The San Antonio Bay region is vast, but the health of its fishery is not inexhaustible. It’s clear that there are limits to its sustainability that we do not wish to exceed. The resources are resilient, but we realize we need to place equal emphasis on the preservation of the fishery. That’s why we’re investigating different options that would allow us to help preserve it for future generations.

CATCH & RELEASE

We needed a path towards the sustainability of our local fishery. One that would make a definitive and positive impact. Our first option was to make catch and release mandatory for all of our guests, but we realized that wasn’t fully compatible with our business model or our guest’s expectations. We understand that our guests expect to dine on the bounty of their daily catch and trust us…we enjoy a fresh red fish on the half shell as much as anybody else. In order to balance all of these needs, we needed to change our approach to guided fishing on in the San Antonio bay.

The long term vitality of our fishery is paramount to the future of recreation on the Texas coast. If we want this beautiful ecosystem to survive and thrive for future generations, we need to start doing things differently. That is we now offer and encourage all guests to sign up for catch and release at the time of booking. If our guests. wish to eat their catch that evening, we encourage that they only retain the fish needed for that evening’s dinner, and release the rest. We’re also placing emphasis on catch and release formats for our corporate guests who host fishing tournaments at our lodge. It’s been a few years since we began practicing more responsible business regarding the sustainability of our fishery, but we’re just getting started.

With a little help from you, our valued customers, we can ensure that this beautiful coastline serves as a safe haven for our future generations, and that the traditions of hunting and fishing will live on in the San Antonio Bay.
