The June Fly That Proved Best

As reported by Chris Martin . . .

I just learned to tie this fly with the help of Capt. Matt Laugh, one of our premier fly guides at Bay Flats Lodge. Having fished alongside Capt. Matt for as long as i have, I can confidently say his flies not only perform well day-to-day, but I’ve also caught the most fish this year using this same fly, day after day.

They say the greatest form of flattery is imitation. That’s why I’ve taken Capt. Matt’s fly and tied several versions of it myself.

Let’s get started!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Place a size 1 Mustad Alpha Point Hard Head Jig Hook (J60AP) in the vise.
  2. Build a small base with your thread just past the bend of the jig head.
  3. Slip a size 1/4 Anodized Emerald or Teal cone head over the hook, sliding it down to the thread.
  4. Apply a drop of super glue with the hook facing downward and let it dry.
  5. Use your whip finish to secure the cone head in place.
  6. Build up a base near the hook shank using your favorite color thread.

Adding the Body & Legs:

  1. Add speckled tan/brown medium centipede legs by MFC, tying them in on each side.
  2. Use MFC John Rohmers Arizona Dubbing in Chartreuse to build the body, tying it in as you go.
  3. Tie in your Onion Creek Fly Co. eyes of your choice.
  4. Add Harline Krystal Flash Black (KF15) on each side of the eyes.
  5. Wrap in Lively Legs Crustacean Brush (size 1/2 to 1 inch), tying it in and finishing the last wrap near the cone.

Final Steps:

  1. Whip finish to secure all materials.
  2. Use your bodkin tool to separate the legs on top of the fly. Once separated, add super glue and let it dry.
  3. Turn the fly over and repeat the process for the bottom legs, ensuring symmetry.

With this fly, you’re ready to target the redfish, and other species, with ease. Let me know if you need any help or adjustments along the way!
