When Cody was just a young boy, his grandfather was a full-time commercial shrimper in Seadrift, Texas. As a direct result, Cody spent much of his childhood fishing and duck hunting the bay systems surrounding the Port O’Connor and Seadrift areas.
Throughout grade school and high school, Cody developed a love and amazing talent for the sport of football, which started him on a path to what later became a professional football career. It all began during Cody’s junior year in high school in Grapevine, Texas, when he helped lead the Grapevine High School football team to the Division I Class 4A State Championship.
Cody went on to play football at the college level at the University of North Texas (UNT), which is located in Denton, Texas. While playing football at UNT, Cody won a spot not once, but twice, on the First-Team All-Sun Belt team, and has since been inducted into the University of North Texas Hall of Fame. In 2004, Cody was drafted as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the National Football League (NFL) draft that year. In addition to the Oakland Raiders, Cody also spent his time in the NFL playing for the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets, and the Detroit Lions.
Following his NFL career, Cody pursued a high school football coaching position in 2010 at Texas High School in Texarkana, Texas. Cody coached high school football until 2014, at which time he decided to relocate his family back to the Port O’Connor and Seadrift area where his roots originally began along the Texas coast. He wanted to raise his family where he was raised, and that’s exactly what he is doing today, as he now guides professionally as a full-time fishing and hunting guide for Bay Flats Lodge Resort & Marina in Seadrift, Texas. His professional achievements over the years reflect a drive and determination matched by only a few, and is what you can expect to experience whenever you find yourself in the field or on the water with Capt. Cody Spencer.
