Bay Flats Lodge on San Antonio Bay
By Captain Chris Martin
Edward Falcon from El Campo.
Look to maintain your major efforts over some of the more shallow shell while fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork. If you’re tucking out of the pesky wind in one of the main back lakes, try fishing some of the ever-popular Gulp Shrimp (Penny) beneath a loud popping cork. Otherwise, focus your attention the next few days on shallow areas covered with spotty shell, or with soft mud with shell mixed in every so often.
Now through next month is when some of the year’s largest trout can often be located atop hard sand shorelines as these big fish carry on their spring transition from mud to sand. Bay waters will warm, and will tend to stay warm, and the larger trout will begin staging their feeding efforts atop sandy stretches of shoreline as they search for rafts of mullet and other baitfish during the morning and late afternoon hours. As these mullet move to shallows, the trout will soon get used to finding them there, so those of you who love to throw top water baits should ready yourself for a banner month ahead. Have fun, and good luck out there!
