Every great lodge story begins with the people who keep it running – those who greet you with a smile, guide you through the wild, and quietly go the extra mile behind the scenes. Each month, we’re taking a moment to share their stories. These aren’t just employees – they’re stewards of the land, keepers of tradition, and they are often the reason guests return year after year. This month, meet Hunter Hedrick!
Getting to Know You
Hunter: My name is Hunter Hedrick, and I’m one of the Guest Services and Reservations Managers. I help guests book their trips, answer questions about reservations, check customers in and out, and make sure everything at the lodge runs smoothly each day.
Chris: How long have you been part of the team?
Hunter: I’ve been officially working here for the last four years, but I’ve been helping out during summers and weekends for much longer—I’m also Chris and Deb Martin’s grandson.
Chris: What originally brought you to Bay Flats Lodge?
Hunter: Being the owners’ grandson, you could say I was born to work here.
Chris: What do you enjoy most about working here?
Hunter: It’s always been a dream of mine to work alongside my family, so in many ways, I’m truly living that dream.
Chris: What’s a typical day look like for you?
Hunter: I start early every morning, helping get guests out on their fishing trips. After that, I catch up on any voicemails or emails that came in overnight. If something needs fixing or attention around the lodge, I’m usually one of the first to jump in. After lunch, I prepare for guest check-in at 4 PM, making sure everything is ready so our guests can relax the moment they arrive. Sometimes I also coordinate fishing tournaments for large groups, including organizing and overseeing the weigh-in.
On the Water
Hunter: I’ve been part of this place my whole life, so I’ve got a ton of stories—but picking just one would be tough!
Chris: What’s your go-to fly or lure for redfish?
Hunter: Honestly, I rely on the guides for that. They’re out there every day and know exactly what’s working best.
Chris: What’s one thing guests are always surprised to learn?
Hunter: First-time guests are usually blown away by our food. Our kitchen staff is phenomenal, with years of experience. People often expect a basic meal, but when that plate hits the table—especially our pork chops—they’re in for a real treat.
Chris: Favorite time of year to be on the water?
Hunter: Fishing along the Texas coast is incredible year-round, but I really enjoy spring (April–May) and fall (October–November). The weather is just right—not too hot, not too cold. In spring, you’ll see a great mix of redfish, trout, and black drum. In the fall, the redfish are thick and often school up, which makes for some unforgettable sight-casting experiences.
Chris: If you could fish anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Hunter: I’d love to fish in Hawaii and go after a massive yellowfin tuna or blue marlin. Another dream trip would be back to Key West. I went there at 14 and caught a ton of mahi-mahi on a week-long charter—it was one of the best trips of my life.

Personal Touch
Chris: What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
Hunter: I’m an Eagle Scout. It taught me a lot about leadership, the outdoors, and working hard—skills I still use every day.
Chris: How do you spend your time when you’re not at the lodge?
Hunter: In a family business, you’re never really “off the clock,” but when I do get a break, I love spending time with my wife and daughter. We like going to the park, swimming, or just relaxing together as a family.
Advice & Legacy
Chris: What advice would you give someone visiting Bay Flats Lodge for the first time?
Hunter: Like I tell most guests on the phone—just pack a bag, show up, and get ready for a great time! Bay Flats Lodge is the perfect place to relax. Have a drink, enjoy an incredible meal, and don’t miss the sunsets from the front porch of the main lodge.
Chris: What keeps you motivated day in and day out?
Hunter: My family. Being part of a family business has its challenges, but the opportunity to build something lasting—something my daughter can one day be a part of—is what motivates me every day.
Chris: What does being part of the Bay Flats team mean to you?
Hunter: To me, we’re more than just a team—we’re a family. And that includes everyone here, not just those related by blood. We all care deeply about what we do and the experience we give our guests.
