Fly Fishing at Bay Flats Lodge
The middle Texas coast offers some of the finest fly-fishing and sight casting opprotunities for redfish and speckled trout in the world, and Bay Flats Lodge is situated at the heart of it all...
BFL Guide - Capt. Rick Hammond specializes in fly fishing and light tackle trips out of his technical poling skiff. Species targeted include: Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Tarpon, and Jack Crevelle. Rick's fly-fishing trips are designed for 1-2 people, which allows maximum sight casting opportunities and attention from Rick. He runs a 2008 Beavertail poling skiff that is made with the fly-fishing enthusiast in mind. This boat allows Rick to access the shallow back lakes and flats that are ideal for sight casting to tailing or cruising Redfish.
What to Expect
Our typical day starts just after sunrise at the boat dock adjacent to Bay Flats Lodge. Before departing the dock, Rick will go through the game-plan for the day and make sure that any fishing tackle you brought is ready for fishing. If you need help with casting technique or tackle selection, this is the time to ask. Rick usually fishes in the numerous back lakes and flats that surround the Seadrift/Port O'Connor area. He will usually start the day by looking for "tailing" redfish, which can often bee seen from long distances in the early morning light. As the sun gets higher, the redfish often break up into smaller groups, making for some exciting sight casting to fish cruising the flats. The trip will usually last 6-8 hours, and includes on the water lunch and beverages. Rick also has a full assortment of flies and leader material onboard, if needed.
What to bring:
- Fly Rod/Reel (see "Fly Fishing Tackle" below for details)
- Polarized Sunglasses (amber, vermillion, or grey lenses are best)
- Any personal flies, leaders, and tackle you want
- Sunscreen
- Camera
Fly Fishing Tackle
For fly tackle, Rick recommends a 7-10 weight rod with matching weight forward floating line, that you have practiced with several times before the trip. For backing, 200 yards of 20-30 pound test is sufficient. For leaders, Rick likes to use a single 9' section of 10-20 pound flourocarbon. Leaders should range from 9 to 12 feet in length with a tippet strength of 8 to 15 lbs and do not require a shock tippet. Use a loop to loop connection for the fly line to leader and tie the leader directly to the fly with an improved clinch knot. In certain conditions, Rick may suggest a 2-piece leader with one section of 20 pound leader and a small section of 4X-0X tippet. An assortment of flies for your trip should include Clouser minnows, Spoon Flys, Scates shrimp, seaducers, deceivers, bent-backs, popping bugs, and any other saltwater fly made to resemble a shrimp or local baitfish. If you do not have your own equipment or flies, Rick will have extra flyrod setups and a large selection of flies available. Rick also ties many of his own fly patterns (see below), also available for use on your trip.
Light Tackle Trips
In addition to fly-fishing, Rick also offers sight casting with light tackle spinning or baitcasting setups. These fishing trips are very similar to fly-fishing, except you will be casting topwater and soft plastic baits and tailing or cruising fish on the flats, while Rick poles the boat.
